Back to the UK – a little tour of RHS Wisley. A real taste of Autumn

A free afternoon (washing done, a trip to Sainsbury's to follow) and a quick drive out to the RHS gardens at Wisley - blue skies and sunshine, alas not continuing into the weekend - but so much to see as I wandered past the lake to the Glasshouse Borders and South African Meadow, up through…

Things that caught my eye etc., etc., – and a gourmet tour of the East End (didn’t expect that, did you!)

A day at Petersham Nurseries, working I might add, dispensing horticultural advice and bon-mots to a pretty happy crowd - weather warm but not too warm, a good breeze, plenty of plants to pretty the place up, time to talk to the customers - and keep everything watered - and time to make a few…

Things that caught my eye today – Ideas to brighten up the garden in July, August and beyond ….

Firstly a few from home this evening - I'm particularly pleased with the lilies in the front garden, wafting their intoxicating fragrance for weeks now - and the bright blue Campanula Blue Octopus, flowering for over a month. Just a little gallery – Acers through to Woodwardia – a horticultural catch-up of the past couple of colourful, autumnal weeks

Well, Acers first - from Wisley and Kew, Winkworth Arboretum and here and thereabouts! Followed by the rest of the As through to C ..s .... and moving on through the D E F and a touch of the Gs - there's a whole little gallery of Gentians afterwards - the more colourful elements…

Another chocolate fancy…

Cosmos Chocamocha A new-ish form of the favourite chocolate-scented, late-summer flowering Cosmos atrosanguineus... with even more chocolately aroma, velvety bronze-red flowers and all a little more compact, so less need for staking. It will flower, in full sun, from June to September and grow to a height of 45cm. A great companion for other late-flowering…

Kniphofia Prince Igor

Huge flowerheads of Kniphofia Prince Igor, towering over the roses and mixed herbaceous planting in the Bowes Lyon Rose Garden at RHS Wisley. Now I know kniphofia and I have had a mini-affair recently  - with Mango Popsicle specifically - but this - THIS - this is a significant presence in the border, a very…
