Rose, Lady Emma Hamilton (Austin). Another look forward, though in my defence, this rose is still blooming in the garden (I posted a picture a couple of weeks ago, flowering happily amongst the snowfall). The colours now have lost much of the the summer intensity of oranges, apricot and gold but to remind myself... The…

Magnolia
A little early for magnolia blossom, although the flower buds are already plump and furry. Such a variety of form and flower, evergreen and deciduous. I have M. x loebneri Leonard Messel, an unnamed M. soulangeana and an apricot flowered form at home, the name of which escapes me (bought last year). All beautiful. Black…
Hellebores
Hellebores are a group of plants usually grown in 'woodland' conditions in the UK, flowering from late winter through to mid-spring. The flowers are white, cream, pink, purple, or green, sometimes spotted, and are pendant or outward facing, saucer to cup shaped or tubular bells shaped! New varieties are becoming available such as Anna's Red…
Crocus tricolor
One of my favourite crocuses, aptly named 'tricolor' for its distinct banding of golden yellow, white and lilac. A really silky sheen to the petals and long flowering. I shall have to look out their pot in my garden and give them pride of place for early next month. Crocus sieberi sublimis f. tricolor AGM
Hamamelis x intermedia Copper Cascade
Hamamelis x intermedia Copper Cascade (Witch hazel). Back to seasonal themes with this astonishingly beautiful and richly coloured witch hazel, Copper Cascade. The overall impression, particularly against the dark evergreens and bare branches of other woodland trees is more subtle, but close up - wow!
Daphne bholua Alba
Daphne bholua 'Alba', the white flowered form of this intoxicatingly sweet scented shrub. Typically evergreen and growing 6' to 10' high, less in spread. Reading from Michael Dirr's Encyclopedia 'The Daphnes are great garden plants and several species offer the sweetest fragrance... Daphne culture is akin to voodoo medicine, and many different recommendations are given.…
Hydrangea and Ice
Hydrangea Flower and Ice. An image taken during a magical walk around a near deserted and very snowy garden at RHS Wisley, Surrey. Colour and scent are available to furnish the winter garden but seed heads, spent flowers, last season's grass stems and much more can still delight. No need to be overly tidy and…
Daphne bholua ‘Limpsfield’ at RHS Wisley
Daphne bholua 'Limpsfield', overlooking the glasshouse at RHS Wisley. Scent is so important to the winter garden. Many flowers are almost insignificant (Sarcoccoca for example) but pack a real olfactory punch. Daphne bholua, flowering now, have richly fragrant blossom and as you can see, are quite showy too. This is Daphne bholua 'Limpsfield' - photographed…
Hamamelis – Witch hazel
Hamamelis (Witch hazel) - probably 'Jelena' - a real garden treat with coppery orange flowers in early to mid-winter and orange to yellow and red autumn foliage. A plant grown as much for autumn colour as these frost-resistant, fragrant spider-shaped flowers. They are good specimen plants and are also effective when grown in groups in…
