A few minutes to explore this remarkable tree, at the nadir of pristine lilac-pink blossom, leaves just pumping up from remarkable miniatures and the undoubted star of the Mediterranean Garden at Kew Gardens today. There was birdsong, but also the planes, so perhaps you might lower the volume on your whatever-it-is-you're-watching-this-on device!

Damson Merryweather
OK, I have rotated the picture round from landscape to portrait, but I like the effect! Damson Merryweather blossom Merryweather is one of the most widely-planted and hardy damsons. The fruit is large by damson standards and Merryweather is in some ways more like a small plum. The fruit can be eaten fresh if left…
The most gorgeous, happiest little crab apple
I met this beautiful little tree this afternoon, the both of us positively basking in the warm sunshine and (the tree) having suffered not a jot with the chilly winds and hail we have had earlier this week. I don't know the cultivar but is an early-flowering variety, or has been chivvied along by the…

Malus transitoria – crab apple delights
Malus transitoria, the cut-leaved crab apple (photographed at RHS Wisley earlier this week) Crab apples are often excellent small trees for the garden, with late spring blossom to rival many of the Japanese Cherries, persistent fruit (attractive but only barely edible in the strictest sense). The blossom can be exceedingly fragrant and runs the gamut…
Cherry Blossom Time
Prunus Kursar. I've posted about this particular tree before, though the picture I was using was from 2012. This image was taken a few days ago. Flowering ornamental cherries are a fine sight in the spring, though this year, few specimens are giving any hint of the show to come. They can be excellent specimen…
Prunus ‘Kursar’
Excerpts from the RHS commentary on this early flowering cherry: This small tree packs a punch with beautiful deep-pink saucer flowers profusely borne on bare stems. It is a favourite of our gardeners because it gives a splash of intense colour before the other showy flowering trees such as magnolias... really get going. The ornamental…
