There are fireworks going off in the garden throughout all the other seasons while Winter can be altogether more restful. We know there is a lot of interest - evergreens, winter flower and scent - and we shouldn't forget trees and their bark in particular. Bone white birch (so many varieties - white stemmed -…

Hellebores

Hellebores are a group of plants usually grown in 'woodland' conditions in the UK, flowering from late winter through to mid-spring. The flowers are white, cream, pink, purple, or green, sometimes spotted, and are pendant or outward facing, saucer to cup shaped or tubular bells shaped! Crocus tricolor

One of my favourite crocuses, aptly named 'tricolor' for its distinct banding of golden yellow, white and lilac. A really silky sheen to the petals and long flowering. Daphne culture is akin to voodoo medicine, and many different recommendations are given.…

Colour and scent are available to furnish the winter garden but seed heads, spent flowers, last season's grass stems and much more can still delight. No need to be overly tidy and…

Double hellebore (probably an Ashwood hybrid)

A double hellebore. Just a few early varieties of hellebore are flowering now and the display will only get better, continuing into March and, wait for it, Spring. Here's a taste of what we have to look forward to.
